While we primarily work with a variety of woods including oak, maple, cherry, and walnut, we also enjoy crafting elements consisting of metal, acrylic, stone and glass.
Post-consumer reclaimed, post-industrial, salvaged, recovered, recycled, antique. What do these buzzwords mean and what is the difference when using these types of materials?
Reclaimed means that it has previously been used for an application, usually for a building or structure, including barns, industrial buildings, gym bleachers, ships, etc. Words like “recycled wood” or “repurposed wood” can be used to describe reclaimed wood as well, but may have different non-structural sources, like wood shipping pallets.
Unlike reclaimed materials, which have been used for some kind of previous application, salvaged or “recovered” is a new item that has been harvested or obtained as a by-product of another process.
In the case of salvaged wood, it will generally lack the checking, holes, and stains inherent in post-consumer reclaimed wood since the wood has not been used by a consumer.
Both salvaged and reclaimed items help divert waste from landfills and promote recycling materials for smart reuse. These items are typically full of character and inherent beauty that with proper maintenance, can last another lifetime.
